Preparations for the re-opening of Gisenyi Airstrip in Rubavu town are in their final stages, authorities have confirmed.
Rubavu Mayor Prosper Mulindwa said rehabilitation works—such as runway markings, perimeter fencing, and aircraft guidance equipment—have been ongoing since 2025 to restore the long-inactive airstrip and prepare it for full operations.
“We had initially expected the airstrip to be operational by December 2025,” Mulindwa said in an exclusive interview with The New Times. “Preparations of the re-opening began in 2025, with upgrading key infrastructure to ensure safe ground movement, approach, and landing.”
According to the mayor, the upgrades are now nearing completion. In addition to physical infrastructure improvements, authorities are revising air routes and processing the necessary legal documentation in coordination with relevant institutions.
“These processes are progressing smoothly, and so far, there are no major challenges that could hinder the re-opening,” he noted.
Mulindwa expressed optimism that the re-opening will significantly boost tourism and economic activity in the district, explaining that some tourists prefer air travel to save time, especially those on tight schedules.
“Once the airstrip re-opens, we expect an increase in visitor numbers, particularly among tourists who find road transport time-consuming,” he said.
Previous delays in re-opening the facility were largely attributed to insecurity in eastern DR Congo, given Rubavu town’s proximity to Goma. “The insecurity in the neighboring country [DR Congo] was one of the key challenges delaying the re-opening of the airstrip, given its close proximity to the border,” he added, noting that aircraft operating in the shared airspace must meet strict safety requirements.
Residents living near the airstrip have welcomed the development, expressing hope that it will stimulate local growth.
“We have learned about the re-opening and expansion project, and this is good news for us and our neighbors,” said Ishimwe Emerance, a local resident. “Many people will benefit, especially from the increase in property values and the overall development of the town.
